A US company Righthaven buys the rights to articles from newspapers
and then generates revenue by suing individuals who posted the
contents of the article on blog sites and the like.
According to this article, the RIAA sued about 20,000 people over
five years, spending $64M in legal costs but collecting only $1.3M in
damages. Film industry settlements are apparently of the same order.
