There is an excellent article in the June 2010 edition of the
"Communications of the ACM" about personally identifiable information.
The authors make the point - convincingly - that "any attribute can be
identifying in combination with others". They basically come to the
conclusion that the idea of "personally identifiable information" is
essentially meaningless unless defined in such strict terms that it
becomes useless. Meaningless or useless - take your pick :-)
The article is about re-identification via datasets that have been
allegedly "de-identified", and is an interesting read.
