The Australian Taxation Office is set to relocate its Canberra data
centre to Sydney following an agreement with Global Switch.

The tax office is an existing Global Switch customer, with 1000sq m at
three sites in Ultimo and Burwood in Sydney and Bruce, ACT. It has
signed up for another 500sq m with Global Switch in Ultimo.

"The ATO is transitioning its equipment from Bruce to Global Switch
Ultimo. Our lease for the Bruce facility, which had . . . capacity
constraints, would end in June 2012," an ATO spokesman said.

Global Switch was chosen, as "the space required needed to be co-located
with the ATO's existing equipment in the GSU facility".

He declined to reveal the contract value, saying the office's data
centre costs were confidential, but "within industry standards".

It is understood the two-year contract is worth $3.6 million a year.

The deal was sealed through ATO's IT outsourcing partner,
Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Services (formerly known as EDS), the
spokesman said.

Global Switch sits on the federal government's interim data centre panel.

Agencies are allowed to procure services from panel members through
their outsourcing partners, a Finance spokesman said.
