Time-limited downloads to your Kindle, iPad, etc - no need to go into  
the library, just access it online?

To allow for the model used for dead tree books there would have to be  
a check-out and check-in system so that the book was only borrowed by  
one person at a time.

Can't see it happening any time soon :-)
