Not hair-splitting at all. I was wondering the same thing. If the law 
would be interpreted to allow for 3rd parties (News Corp) to 
circumvent the anonymity because they aren't recognised as part of 
the 'transaction' (signing up on a blog perhaps?), then there is a 
gap in the law. What gives news orgs any 'right' to expose a person 
who was obviously trying to remain anonymous and had no obligation 
(in the transaction) to reveal their identity?
