About 2 years ago I had to take my laptop in to repair the optical
drive. Being in another country and not wanting my hard disk to be
copied, I backed up my laptop on time machine as usual and with a
small amount of trepidation wiped my hard disk completely. Took the
laptop in to get repaired. Due to a language misunderstanding the
repair guys carefully installed a system on my hard disk. "No," I
said, "I brought it in to get the optical drive repaired." Oh, OK,
drive duly repaired (but I should add it still doesn't play DVD movies
which Apple tells me is a software problem which may be fixed one
day ;-( ). I reinstalled my system from time machine. All worked
perfectly.
All these fancy tape backup systems are great for companies/
departments that can afford them but for home use? Time machine makes
it simple. Although as a home user it is somewhat more problematical
to do such a procedural test.
