Australian 'Big Bother Awards' 2011 - BBA2011
We invite you to nominate candidates for the Orwells and the Smiths.
Details about how to nominate are set out on http://www.privacy.org.au/bba/.
Nominations close on 30 November 2010.
Privacy breaches in Australia continue to be a major concern. One of
the aims of the Australian Privacy Foundation is to focus public
attention on emerging issues and technologies that pose a threat to
the freedom and privacy of Australians. The Big Brother Awards are
designed to name and shame those that threaten privacy and recognise
privacy protectors.
Nominations for the 2011 Big Brother Awards are now open. The Orwells
are the Big Brother Awards that recognise organizations, technologies
and people that have invaded or threaten to invade privacy. The
Smiths (Orwell's 1984 hero who opposed Big Brother) acknowledge
people who protect us from privacy invasions.
The Orwell Awards for this year are for the Categories of:
Worst Corporate Invader - for a corporation that has shown a blatant
disregard for privacy.
Worst Public Agency or Official - for a government agency or official
that has shown a blatant disregard for privacy.
Most Invasive Technology - for a technology that is particularly
privacy invasive.
Boot in the Mouth - for the 'best' (most appalling!) quote on a
privacy-related topic.
The Smith Awards that recognise people who have protected privacy are
for the Categories of:
Best Privacy Guardian - for a meritorious act of privacy protection or defense.
Lifetime Achievement - for outstanding services to privacy protection.
The public will be invited to vote for the winners of the 4 Orwells
and 2 Smiths at the BBA2011 Awards held concurrently in pubs in
several cities on 20 April 2011. Details of the venues will be
available in March when the finalists are announced.
Yours sincerely

Our truest response to the irrationality of the world is to paint or
sing or write, for only in such response do we find truth.
