Most likely a CDMA phone (Code Division Multiple Access, designed by Qualcomm. ...and thanks to Hollywood actress turned inventor Hedy Lamarr - but that's another story). Some CDMA phones have RUIM cards (most US carriers don't, but many in China do) which perform some of the function of SIM cards.

With GSM, account information and (often) contacts are stored on the SIM card. With an increasing number of smart phones, contacts and other information is stored externally. For many pundits, SIM cards appear to be old tech.
