Hi,
one of my work mates had a bit of trouble with the "media police" over 
the weekend.   He's written up a synopsis of what occured 
and I asked him if I could post it here for your enjoyment.....

One answer from our security guys is to never respond to these 
emails - they then have a valid contact if you do....

Dear all,

Just to demonstrate how easy it is to get into trouble, on Saturday my kids had 
a LAN party and their friends brought in Laptops/PCs and connected to my 
network.

Unbeknownst to me at the time one of them had a BitTorrent client with active 
unthrottled seeding on an a known torrent port ("You stoopid smelly slackers, 
git offa my lawn you kids 'n git a hair cut 'n git a job!") which went gang 
busters after attaching to my beautiful connection and banged up 1.3 gig of 
some dreary so called comedy, "Grown Ups."

I've responded below in what I felt was the appropriate cranky if slightly 
technically befuddled parent tone (you can't afford to appear too technical or 
clever with these people - if they're like us and spot someone technologically 
savvy they'll think, "Hmmm smartarse, what else have you been getting up to?").

So, the sequence from bottom up,


1.      Some dumb mutt teenager with improperly an configured 
BitTorrent/µTorrent/Azureus/LimeWire whatever and unrestricted seeding connects 
to my LAN and his bit torrent starts abusing my bandwidth.

2.      The original seed is probably a deliberate plant by the sentry 
operators and torrents from a honey pot.

3.      Sony/Columbia's torrent listener triggers because the spotty twit faced 
whippersnapper uses a known port and doesn't know about the service randomiser 
or proxy surrogates.

4.      The sentry sends TPG an email.

5.      TPG forwards such to me.

6.      I go off at my kids because I've taught them better, I mean, I don't 
allow this kind of illegal behaviour in my house - we don't know anything about 
this kind of unsavoury practice.

7.      When I checked the times and dates and the movie I realised it wasn't 
us.

8.      I responded to TPG.

9.      Forwarded response to Sony/Columbia Media Sentries.

My point now is this - they are watching and waiting, if my IP can be detected 
so easily on a one-off inadvertent offence (technically I suspect I could still 
be held liable as I would be responsible for any traffic initiated in my LAN) 
how exposed is the University where the scale of this is at a minimum 500,000 
times greater based on files we can see, meaning that it is probably then 10 
million times greater.

Most of them connected to my wireless network and they were complaining it was 
"laggy" so I guess that explains it though a couple insisted on getting hard 
wired so maybe they were taking advantage.

I'm getting my kids to email their friends explaining that they got us into 
trouble and to get rid of this stuff. Next time I see their parents I'll 
mention this as well and show them this correspondence.

I find all this stuff bizarre - it's bad enough at teenage parties when you 
have boot kids for having booze now I've got to check their systems for these 
dopey programs.
