Kate Crawford: Smartphones and Social Media
12 Apr 2011, 11:00
The mobile phone's no longer just a fancy version of a tin can with
string you talk into, it's a portal to multiple social spaces that are
constantly changing and updating. What are the social impacts of our
devices always being on, and us continually on them? What does it mean
for our friendships and relationships?
In this lecture - presented by the University of New South Wales -
entitled "Always With Me: how mobile and social media are changing us
", Crawford shares the preliminary findings from the largest study of
mobile media use in Australia.
Kate Crawford is an Associate Professor in the Journalism and Media
Research Centre at UNSW. She is completing a three-year ARC Discovery
project on mobile media use by 18-30 year olds around Australia. Her
books include "Adult Themes" (2006) and forthcoming book
"Understanding the Internet: Language, Technology, Media and Power"
(with Chris Chesher and Anne Dunn). In 2010, she was an invited
research fellow at Microsoft Research Labs in Boston and she is
currently working on a manuscript on the concept of listening and
networked technologies.
