When the first Sony cassette Walkman came out I made that observation back
then. Rechargeable batteries were so rare or expensive then that such
Walkman usage seemed so wasteful and eco-unfriendly. I imagine they went
through at least one set of AAs a week.

My son was one of the census collectors in a very underprivileged part of my
suburb and he said that about 75% of the homes did not have an Internet
account at home. In other parts of town his fellow collectors reported close
to 100% with an Internet connection.
