Ministers have backed down from blocking trouble-makers from using social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter to incite others to riot.
Home Secretary Theresa May met police and executives from social media networks to see how they could help prevent them being used to organise criminal behaviour.
But the Government did not seek any additional powers to close down or restrict networks such as BlackBerry Messenger, Facebook or Twitter, officials said.
The climbdown was backed by Nick Clegg, the deputy Prime Minister, who ministers were not going to support “a Chinese or Iran- black-out of social media”. ...
