The warranty  thing is now gone. The new law makes the seller deal 
with the warranty correction instead of the purchaser going back to 
the manufacturer directly. Also, warranty is NOT the number of months 
stated at the time of purchase, so don't buy extended warranties. The 
goods must last a reasonable time. So no more 'break a day after the 
warranty ends' stuff.

Check with the ACCC for this. We heard a lot about this over the 
Christmas purchase period.

Of course, if you buy from overseas, I think all those bets are off. 
I know when I bought my Acer netbook in the US, the information in 
the product manual says that int'l buyers aren't covered. So I had to 
take a chance that it wouldn't break because I wouldn't be able to 
get a replacement or fixed under warranty.
