$300,000 PA doesn't sound an excessive salary for a project of the
scale, importance and difficulty of the NBN. So far the NBN people have
done a difficult job well.
Contrast this with defence procurement: at the moment most of the
submarines are in for repairs and none of the amphibious transport ships
are seaworthy (Australia has now bought a second hand ship from the UK
at a bargain basement price to fill the gap). This situation is going to
get worse, with Australia having to keep up with an an arms race under
way in the Indian Ocean and East Asia.
ps: The NBN is not separate from the arms race. Part of the investment
in the region is in cyber warfare. The NBN will be a legitimate target
for attack and a very attractive one, due to its size and importance.
