ANU's shipping container apartment building for students is working 
well. It now has two wings, six floors high. Note that these are new 
containers professionally fitted out in a factory with kitchens and 
bathrooms to an architect design:

ps: Just to make this on-topic for Link: the apartments come equipped 
for Internet access to the university network, an on-demand video 
service and a flat screen LCD panel fixed to the wall. The students 
could do much of their course without going out. ;-)
