I believe there are fairly widely deployed storage systems that will
do 'live' redundancy but require very low latency, and speed of light
becomes a factor at higher distances (from memory the maximum distance
was 40km).
So while geographic dispersement is desirable for business continuity
purposes, an arbitrary distance is not suitable for all applications.
