I just loaded smh.com.au (12.5 seconds - it is slow this morning) then followed the link to national news (2.8 seconds to load), then went to world news (2.1 seconds).

Granted, there are some images, but not that many, and the headlines present themselves where I can see it.

But my view might be very different: I use Safari 5.0.3 with AdBlocker, Glims and ClickToFlash: all make a HUGE difference in what and how I see via Safari, and for extra good measure, I use Glimmer Blocker systemwide as a http proxy to filter crap.

Adblocker: http://sweetpproductions.com/safariadblocker/

Glims: http://www.machangout.com/

Glimmer Blocker: http://glimmerblocker.org/

ClickToFlash: http://clicktoflash.com/
