And part of the 'market' is the environment within which people are 
doing the developing, the supply chains, the end-user requirements, 
etc. We could be creating betamax videos, but I doubt there are many 
people still able to play them.

The one thing that is interesting in computing is the backward 
compatibility that seems to be a somewhat continuing element. I 
haven't tried it lately, but I believe you can still use the old DOS 
programs on the newer machines. You can still access a DOS c:\ if you 
really want it. I know people who still write batch programs to do 
stuff in the new environments. [now I'm stretching -- think I'll stop]
