It seems astonishing that they relied on their own power to pull the fuel rods in an emergency and for all their controls.  No backup power!!  No diesel generator just in case!  How did they even start the system up?

Not even a design with explosives that could be placed in such a way as to blow the pile apart enough to cool it?  I don't think any explosives could be left in place for a long time in an environment saturated with neutrons but surely they could have them at some distance with the ability to push them into place when it was required.
