The above wording appears on every alert I have seen from that rather
insipid service. It cries wolf with the same lame tune in each alert.
Their message gets old and boring really fast.

Quite true.
I don't know how effective or useful the "Stay Smart Online Alert Service"
is for the uninitiated, but I find [SECURITY] [DSA] much more useful,
i.e.
"Stephane Chazelas discovered that the cronjob of the PHP 5 package in
Debian suffers from a race condition which might be used to remove
arbitrary files from a system"
The alerts from DSA explain exactly what could happen if you do not
upgrade to fix the problem. And often the Debian alerts apply equally
to other systems. They are a very informative and useful source of
information.
