I haven't checked out your source but my understanding was that the USA has
never backed nor trained al-Qaeda nor OBL, the whole CIA thing is a myth.

That's not to say that there weren't other groups who having received
support in the past subsequently turned against the US. The Afghan Taliban
is the obvious example.
