Well, you could download and install the free, open source "Jitsi"

and get free PC-to-PC calls over SIP

with no monthly fee

(plus text chats using Goggle talk servers via Jabber)...

Before SIP, I remember doing PC-to-PC free voice calls with Net2Phone,
abount 14 years ago. And it still works

The way I see it, Skype´s big asset was its name, it went viral and
suddenly "call me over IP" became "call me on skype". So it gained a
critical mass of users. But that´s about it.
