In primary school in India we had to fill out Vere Foster copybooks (in
pencil, so no need to use a blotter). My handwriting then was cursive and
not too pretty, but in high school I switched to print because a teacher had
a bee in her bonnet about it. It has stayed that way ever since.

I think Aussie kids are taught to hold a pen differently than the way I was
taught (the tripod grip). They seem to use two fingers to hold the pen and
the middle finger is used as a guide.
North Americans write in a very distinctive script and in general tend to be
very legible writers.
