[LINK] Northern Territory schools get wi-fi, iPads

The XO device deployed by OLPC is a purpose-built educational tool for
primary school kids, is ruggedised with sand and rain proof keyboard
and outdoor bright sunlight viewable screen, and has mesh networking
combined with software and firmware designed by educators for teachers
to use as part of the teaching process. Terrific as it is, the iPad
has none of those things, is totally unsuitable for remote outdoor use
by young children, and does not have the apps that will enhance the
educational experience. Let's hope the early trials show that it's a
bad idea before everyone jumps on the iPad bandwagon without thinking
about the kids' needs.
