The creator of C and (with others) Unix has died at the age of 71.
I can't think of anyone who made a better contribution to computer
programming languages and operating systems. I believe C and Unix, and
the thinking which goes with them, have been a profoundly positive
influence on IT and so on the world in general.
The Wikipedia page credits the creation of Unix to Ken Thompson, Dennis
Ritchie, Brian Kernighan, Douglas McIlroy, and Joe Ossanna.
Dennis Ritchie is not so well known to the public as those those in
charge of big computer / software companies. He didn't run a business
or, as far as I know, make many well publicised speeches, product
announcements etc. Also, his most significant work was in the in the
1970s, whereas the more widely known Linus Torvalds made his
contributions in the last two decades.
