A digital camera which uses an array of microlenses just in front of the
image sensor, to produce a little fish-eye-like image in the photodiodes
immediately behind each lens.  Then throw some intense signal processing
at the image and it is possible to create from it multiple pictures,
each with a different focal length.

I had a quick look at the thesis behind this, by Ren Ng in 2006 :
