Yes, it's a lot easier to say these things when you're not a denizen 
of 'normal science' and hence not dependent on employment by the 
conservative academy and funding by research agencies.

(In fact a Vis Prof is permitted, and even *expected*, by the ARC to 
work for free, and to not draw any funding support from Grants 
nomatter how much time and expertise they gift.  ARC seems to have 
the notion that Vis Profs are 'people of independent means' and that 
they like donating to science).

To be fair to the two organisations that I'm associated with, I think 
they're quite happy for me to say what I say.  At least at School / 
Faculty level, they are.  If the Chief Scientist was still ANU's VC, 
he might think a little differently, I'm not sure.
