One body is the "Telecommunications Society of Australia" (TSA), formed
in 1874 as the "Telegraph Electrical Society", it became part of the
Australian Computer Society in 2007: http://www.acs.org.au/acstsa/
TSA is for people working in the telecommunications industry,
rather than a user group, but does provide one forum for information
about what is happening with telecommunications and an independent voice
to government on issues of public policy.
The next TSA event is the annual Charles Todd Oration, 8 September 2011.
This year the oration is by David Thodey, CEO Telstra. The event in
Sydney is fully booked, but there is still room for the video streamed
version in Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide:

Last years oration was by Mike Quigley, CEO NBN Co:

ps: I am on the TSA board.
