The NSW Premier, Barry O'Farrell, has proposed to use a high speed rail
line from Sydney to Canberra in place of a second Sydney airport:

Broadband access on the train would also make this form of travel more
attractive and something much harder for an aircraft to provide.
Broadband could also be used to make new and expanded settlements at
stations along the train route attractive. This would allow new towns to
offer jobs, education, health and education to capit city standards very
quickly. The resulting improved land value could pay for the cost of the
train.
