As things stand, algal or bacterial biofuels seem to hold most promise. 
Liquid fuels are far from perfect, but we have the infrastructure, 
technology and experience in handling them. I reckon we have a toxic 
time-bomb in the batteries we use at present (of all technologies, 
including single-use). We'd be fools to vastly increase the volume.
