There would need to be at least two different signals: one for the daily
peak and one for annual peaks. Sending these signals over the power
lines can cause interference.
Also it may be use for have more complex signals for more sophisticated
devices. As an example, sending a signal in advance of an anticipated
peak would allow an appliance to gracefully lower its power use, rather
than a sudden "SWITCH OFF NOW".
Even this would only need a few bits per second, but we should not deny
the promoters of the NBN the opportunity to plug its virtues. ;-)
