Some of the UN icons are a little disturbing when your read the 
captions, such as "child soldier".

Coming up with meaningful pictograms is a difficult task. I recommend 
the book "Symbol Signs" (AIGA, 1993) which documents the development of 
the standard symbols for use in airports:
