Paul, I think he was referring to that rare non-Australian Telco thing 
called "Peering"

Optus and Vodafone already peer and all three telcos share power 
generation, towers and other assets, but not yet consumers.
Their settlement system doesn't allow for peering on the 3G network - 
too hard with consumer mobile data expectations.

Which of course makes the new dual Sim or tri-Sim phones a natural 
purchase option - and which is the death knell for the telcos with the 
least coverage - which will be (after the Verizon paid for upgrade is 
finished being rolled out by Voda) - Optus. (Unless the Libs get back in 
and Optus gets the go ahead on alternative wireless... last mile)

It all actually comes down to just one equation. Whom has the largest 
amount of Mhz for data use available on each tower ?
Telstra has more licenses in more different names but Voda actually have 
more of the right spectrum....

As an item of historical note, we (Fist S./Koltai T.) argued in 1996 
before the local loop (copper) senate committee that wireless local loop 
would be the only option unless the Government mandated open access to 
the copper....

Telstra didn't believe in peering back then either... They really don't 
share well at all. Maybe Telstra never had a mum, just a dad...
