It's not gumption, it's desperation.
Best Buy's profits dropped 91% last quarter, and that's after they closed
50 stores and laid off 2,500 staff earlier it the year. They've been
through multiple "reboots" in the past few years (the most recent being the
move away from larger stores and towards becoming little more than a mobile
phone retailer) - the odds of yet another one being the magic change that
saves them seems low...
As much as Harvey may complain about it, the impact of online retailing in
Australia is miniscule compared to the US.
(I actually won a $50 Best Buy gift certificate years ago. It took me
almost 3 years before I used it - mainly because anything I could get from
Best Buy I could get elsewhere cheaper. In the end, I used to for iTunes
vouchers to give to a friend...)
