Cars: The Next Victims of Cyberattacks
by Bob Charette, an IEEE Spectrum contributing editor, writes the
Risk Factor blog. As a self-described "risk ecologist," he
investigates the impact of the changing concept of risk on technology
and societal development.

Every year, automakers endow vehicles with more brainpower. But the
computer hardware engineered to keep cars from crashing or to keep
drivers entertained might soon be co-opted by criminals intent on
attacking a single driver or causing widespread havoc. Several
research groups have independently demonstrated smart cars
vulnerability to cyberattacks. Security firm McAfee reported an
incident where a disgruntled former employee at a Texas car
dealership used a remote car deactivation system to simultaneously
shut off the engines of 100 vehicles. Researchers at the University
of California at San Diego and the University of Washington say that
they have hit upon a cyberattack method that makes car theft nearly
foolproof. Thieves could remotely cause expensive cars to report
their whereabouts, then wirelessly send commands that bypass the cars
security systems, unlock their doors, and start their engines.

Our truest response to the irrationality of the world is to paint or
sing or write, for only in such response do we find truth.
