Australia and the NATO alliance countries will sign a political
declaration to work together on developing military technology and
combating attacks on computing networks.
North Atlantic Treaty Organisation Secretary General Anders Fogh
Rasmussen told the National Press club this afternoon Australia and
the 28 members of the European alliance made natural partners.
''Australia's contribution to our common effort is outstanding and we
highly appreciate it,'' Mr Rasmussen said.
He praised Australia's decision to take over leadership in Oruzgan
province later this year, where most of Australia's 1500 troops are based.
Combating terrorism, cyber attacks and piracy were some of the
challenges he said posed a threat to the modern world.
Despite being oceans apart, he said countries everywhere shared
common interests in economic, people and security.
In Canberra for talks with Prime Minister Julia Gillard and other key
ministers, Mr Ramussen said the two would sign a political agreement
to work together in future.
NATO played a major role in the military intervention in Libya last
year but Mr Ramussen again ruled out repeat action in Syria, despite
condemning what he said were clear violations of international law.
''It is absolutely outrageous what we are witnessing,'' he said.
''In the long run no regime can ignore the will of the people.'
