Here's a delightful quote from Dr Alice Robert's "Origins of Us".
> For 10's of 1000's of years we lived simple lives and made basic tools out of stone and yet look at where we are today, what we can build, our technology. It just seems utterly mind-blowing that we're the same species which made those stone tools. It's been suggested that all this cultural change must be linked to a biological change in our brains - but the latest thinking suggests it's a product of something for more basic - a simple increase in numbers.
>
> As populations increase ideas are passed on to more and more people - and there's a greater chance that any inventions, any innovations will get picked up and will spread. Ideas will take up a life of their own, competing with each other, improving and proliferating - and that is cultural evolution.
If that's the case it would seem vitally important for our future not to mess with the very thing that makes us so successful - the free interchange of invention.
