It's been way more than the $2.5 billion the Age discloses, and it's been going on for decades, not years.
An Australian government wet-dream, supported by both sides of the political equation for reasons unknown, which involves us ... we the taxpayers, not the coal industry ... funding test sites in Australia and the US - that have produced nothing (nada, zip. bugger all etc etc) in 25-30 years.
Call it 'carbon sequestration', call it 'carbon capture', call it 'clean coal' or whatever - you'd think that this trough at which the industry feeds (basically as a means of coal industry PR rather than anything substantive) would be shut down and the admission made that burning coal cannot be done both cleanly and economically.
It's one of the other.
To the Australian government ... time to put the money to better use ... time to let the coal industry pay for its own advertising and PR. Works for all the other miners.
Just my 2 cents worth ...
