With most technologies, the money first often comes for the military
applications, then business, then consumer. I realise the scale of
this shift is different (infrastructure rather than gadgets or
engineering components), but are there any examples where the energy
needs are showing this level of baseload provision on a town-sized
scale at least, where fossil fuel is hard to come by reliably? The
only one I know of is the ISS (too expensive to haul coal up there
and energy is critical to life on the station).
Vint Cerf is on Weekend Sunrise. Believes in 'geek orthodox'. Praising the NBN.
Trends: mobile net, net of things, buildings with sensor
networks/environmentals
One of the reasons to make sure efficient use of non-renewable
resources --- so clean coal does tie in! :-)

Our truest response to the irrationality of the world is to paint or
sing or write, for only in such response do we find truth.
