Telstra takes on the music streaming services market with MOG

(Service pricing comparable with Rdio, Spotify, and JB Music Now)

Telstra is taking on the music streaming services market in Australia, 
which includes the likes of Rdio, Spotify and JB Music Now, through a new 
partnership with MOG which will bring a library of 16 million songs at 
320kbps to Australian consumers.

The service will be available via compatible PCs, digital music players, 
Apple and Android smartphones, tablets, and wireless hi-fi systems. It 
can be used by any consumer, regardless of their ISP or phone provider, 
though Telstra BigPond and Next G customers do not face data charges.

The MOG service allows customers to listen to music offline after adding 
songs to their mobile device. Additionally, customers have access to MOG 
Radio, as well as personalised recommendations which are generated from 
listening habits and Facebook ‘likes.’

Following a two-week free trial, the PC version will cost customers $6.99 
per month, with the mobile version priced at $11.99 per month. 

Telstra's MOG prices are fairly similar to rival services Spotify, Rdio 
and JB Music Now. Spotify charges $6.99 per month for a basic 
subscription, and $11.99 for a premium one, while Rdio ($8.90 per month 
for Web, $12.90 for premium), and JB Music Now ($6.88 per month PC-only, 
$10 per month for premium) use a similar pricing structure.

"There are still many questions to be answered and much to learn about 
the way online music subscription will affect and change how we listen to 
and appreciate music," Australian musician and actress, Clare Bowditch, 
said.

"Telstra’s research found that 50 per cent of Australians haven’t bought 
a CD from a record store in the last year with 75 per cent of people 
saying it’s due to the cost of CDs or citing constantly changing music 
taste as the reason."
