[LINK] RFC: Which Email Service?

A friend in a country area faces yet another change of ISP, and hence
wants to avoid using their ISP-supplied email-address, and establish
a separate and long-lived one.
The friend appreciates how awful Gmail has been since its launch in
2004 (and how even awfuller it became in 2012).
The friend's need is mainstream: access by all of webmail, POP and
IMAP; decent webmail functionality and user interface; reliability
of access; enough space; reasonable terms, and especially no
supplier rights to exploit the user's data; low cost. (Free is
nice, but of course it depends on the nature of the advertising, and
the skulduggery used to achieve better targetting of the ads).
What options do people have?
Are the longstanding services still okay:
- http://www.hotmail.com/ (now MS Live Hotmail)
Does anyone have any experience with these?

http://www.hushmail.com/

http://www.mail.com/int/
A couple of lists of providers are here:

http://www.internet-guide.co.uk/free-email-accounts.html (UK)

Suggestions greatly appreciated, on and off list.
Thanks!
