ITU Move to Expand Powers Threatens the Internet
March 16, 2012
https://www.cdt.org/report/itu-move-expand-powers-threatens-internet
This year, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU)
is considering whether to expand its regulatory authority to the
Internet. Such a move would have profound implications for the
future of the Internet and could threaten the medium's success as a
platform for innovation, economic growth, human development, and
democratic participation. Civil society must have a voice in this
important debate. CDT has released a report that provides an
overview of the ITU treaty renegotiation process and the challenges
and opportunities it presents.
The document is at https://www.cdt.org/files/pdfs/CDT-ITU_WCIT12_background.pdf
[CDT is a business-funded advocacy organisation, not part of civil
society. It has a pro-American-business flavour. On the other hand,
most of its work is well-attuned to people's needs, i.e. you have to
be wary, but they're mostly 'good guys'. Personal opinion only,
needless to say.]
