Two DNS utilities that are a must-have in Windows, both Open Source AFAIK:

1.NetSelector

This lets me switch between DNS providers with a couple clicks, right
from the Systray. I have configured "Local DNS proxy" (more on that in
point #2), "OpenDNS", "Google DNS", and "My ISP´s DNS", I can select
any I want in case of trouble without hassle and without rebooting.

Cons: requires MSFT .Net 2.0 runtime

http://netselector.sourceforge.net/

2. Acrylic DNS proxy
http://sourceforge.net/projects/acrylic/

a text-mode, win32 caching DNS server/proxy

Just point your OS to localhost, and Acrylic DNS queries the external
proxy when needed, or its local table (cached). The performance boost
(lack of lag between clicking and the page starts loading) is very
noticeable

FWIW:

3. I use wired Gigabit Ethernet at home, no wireless involved at all,
I´m not sure how well app #1 would work (if at all) on anything other
than eth0.

4. I point Acrylic towards OpenDNS, use Google´s DNS only as a backup
in case of trouble/testing, and my ISP´s DNS never (I just keep that
option as a "last resort").

Please forgive me if I misunderstood the spirit of your post.
