I don't have the exact numbers and it's not my area, but it's used on over
half of our like 8k PCs at Health in Tasmania. We would experiment with a
new OS for about 2 years in IS, depending on the stability and level of
problems running like 200 health applications, before rolling it out. It
would then go out on new PCs and sometimes get retrofitted on more recent
boxes but wouldn't go on older kit. This is too problematic. The
lifetime for desktops would be about 4 years - possibly more now
considering the state finances - so XP will be around for another coupe of
years. The move to virtualise more applications has made the desktop OS
less important, and so extended the life of older PCs and XP.
