It is possible for visitors to get a Myki ticket in advance and by now
there is supposed to be a special Myki pack for tourists to purchase at
the airport:

But I found it easier to purchase and use an electronic ticket in
Istanbul than Melbourne. The Istanbul system uses relatively primitive
contact based electronic tokens you have to press into the reader. There
are only a few locations you can buy them, but they are then easy to use
and easy to top up: http://www.tomw.net.au/travel/istanbul.shtml
