I disagree.  I think that their plan has achieved everything they wanted it
to, and probably far more than they would have ever expected.

News coverage across basically every news service on the Internet, as well
as countless non-Internet news coverage. More email and forum posts than
you could count (including nearing 100 on Link alone).

Their *marketing* people have achieved exactly what they wanted here.

And if you believe this was ever anything more than a marketing ploy, then
you're clearly mistaken.  Even if you ignore the common sense angles, ask
yourself when was the last time Amazon released details of a new product or
feature before it was released?  If this was real, the first you would have
officially heard of it would have been the day it was released.
