To contract to government, and even to teach in higher education, I am
required to have PI insurance. Clients demand from $1M to $10M, with $5M
being typical. A search of gov.au web pages found:

Required	Pages
   $1M 5,090
   $5M 3,330
  $10M 4,110

ACS has a free $10M umbrella liability insurance policy for members
earning less than $25k per year (and a deal with a broker for those
over): http://www.acs.org.au/sfia-certification/liability-insurance

Also it is useful being in the ACS Certified Professionals (CPs) scheme,
to limit your liability to the amount you are insured for, under
Australian legislation:
http://www.acs.org.au/sfia-certification/acs-professional-standards-scheme

In addition to PI and Worker's compensation insurance, there is also the
cost of setting up a company and doing the paperwork each year for all
this stuff.
