[LINK] How to protect an old iPad/iPhone

My iPad1 died some time ago. The screen memory caused issues on display.
The thing worked OK in all other respects but I could not do anything
cause the screen was garbage. I bought a new one but despite the
suggestions from Apple Store staff, kept the old version cause it still
had my data on it.
The iPad was registered with Find my iPhone and I configured it to erase
the iPad the moment it appeared on the network. I initialised the iPad
using iTunes as a safety precaution.
So, today, I tried to restore the iPad from a backup because I was
missing a file I needed and thought the restore would allow me to get a
copy. The restore worked perfectly but interestingly enough, the moment
the iPad appeared on the network, Find my iPhone erased it sending an
email to my account saying it had done so.
So a comforting experience for me at any rate even if I could not get
the file I wanted.
