...and the truth is probably something in between.

Gizmodo's "nothing happened" story is very US centric but it does make a
good point that "most people" wouldn't have noticed the difference.

However it also fails to take into account the localised issues caused by
the traffic. Cloudflare's anycast network would have attracted the attack
packets to the nearest of their 20-or-so POPs, so while they saw 300Gb/s in
aggregate, the levels at each POP would be have been a lot smaller although
still possibly congesting links given most are only 1 or 10 Gb/s.
