Another, ill conceived technology driven solution to a badly thought
through problem.

In fact, I don't know what their problem actually is and I doubt that
the LA School District did either.

The Australian reported this today, but the story has been around for a
while.

THE most ambitious effort to drag US schools into the digital age is in
danger of being derailed by hacker students, disgruntled teachers and
tens of millions of dollars in unforeseen costs.

The $US1 billion ($1.09bn) plan to provide an iPad loaded with
educational content to each of the 650,000 students in the Los Angeles
Unified School District was touted as a means of introducing the tablet
computers into low-income households.

The scheme covers every age bracket, from kindergarten to high school.
Children are supposed to use the gadgets to take tests, complete
homework and read textbooks. Within days, however, more than 300
teenagers from three of the first high schools to receive the iPads
found a way to bypass pre-installed security measures. Instead of
studying, they were accessing social media websites such as YouTube,
Twitter and Facebook.ids shoot a hole in LA iPad plan
